Traffic School
Traffic school, not to be confused with driver’s education, is a class that brings current drivers up to date on traffic laws and violations. Traffic school is not a driver’s education course offered to first-time drivers as a criteria for obtaining a driver’s license for the first time. Most often, traffic school is offered or appointed by a court of law in response to an already licensed driver who is cited with a moving violation.
In most US jurisdictions, traffic school is offered privately, online and through traffic court. The majority of attendees to traffic school have been cited with a non-alcohol related moving violation. Driving above the speed limit or failure to yield would constitute a moving violation. In most jurisdictions, you can eliminate the citation from your driving record by attending traffic school.
You are generally considered eligible for traffic school if you were cited with a non-alcohol related moving violation that does not require a court appearance. The specifications for removing the citation from your record may vary with each jurisdiction, but is generally noted on the issued ticket. For details not provided, there should be a phone number located on the issued ticket as well.
There are several advantages to traffic school as a means of eliminating a citation of record. Though employment may be one, the biggest advantage is car insurance rates. The more points you have on your driving record due to moving violations or other citations, the more expensive your car insurance rates become. By attending a brief course in traffic school, often only a day’s time, you can keep points off your record and keep your insurance rates down.
For information on qualifications for traffic school and whether or not you are eligible, you will need to review the information on your citation or call your local traffic court.
