Summer SchoolTake summer school classes online to help save you time and money! So, you just discovered that your child would be attending summer school. At first, you may feel as if your child is failing and view summer school as a negative action, however summer school can be a very positive and rewarding experience for your child. The first area of concern that you will need to address is in regards to your child’s self-esteem. Many children look forward to the end of the school year and visualize themselves with friends, swimming, playing or simply watching television and playing video games during the summer. When they discover that they will need to spend additional time applying themselves to schoolwork, they can begin to lose their self-esteem and self-confidence. As a parent, you should reinforce your child’s emotional well being by letting them know that it is ok to fail, but that we have to pick ourselves up, work harder, and reach out target goal. If your child has been struggling throughout the year, consider this time in summer school as a great way to overcome the year’s previous obstacles. You can help your child by not criticizing him or her, or making remarks about your child’s intelligence. Too many times, parents jokingly call their children names such as “dumb”, “stupid”, or even “lazy”. These comments will only produce negative reactions in your child and can hinder their belief that they can be great learners and thinkers. Offer your child praise and commend them for every leap and stride that they make during their school year and summer school. Finally, remember that all children are different and learn in their own individual styles. Just because your child fell behind doesn’t necessarily mean that he or she didn’t apply themselves at their full capacity. There could be a number of different reasons as to what caused the lapse. However, the focus should be on instilling values in your child that will teach him or her the importance of learning and at the same time, build up their self-esteem and self-confidence. Positive words of encouragement should be given to your child at all times. As your child believes in him or herself, you will see his or her grades improve. |
