Even though school violence has always existed in this country, the number of crimes against students by students has dramatically increased in recent years. During the mid to late 1990's, there was a string of school crimes, which resulted in the death of many innocent bystanders. Many people are familiar with attacks such as the one that occurred at Columbine High School in 1999. While a tragedy of this sort is rare, approximately 3 million students become victims each year. School violence incidents do not necessary involves guns or weapons. Rather, some students choose to overpower others with their fist. For this matter, physical fighting is a common form of school violence. Students may not be able to avoid conflict. Yet, there are ways to evade a violent encounter with another classmate.

Because of various hate groups, a select group of students will provoke fights or constantly harass another student because of their nationality, race, gender, and so forth. Ignoring verbal attacks and threats is difficult. With this said, trying to avoid a physical fight is equally challenging. However, due to an increased in school gangs and students sneaking weapons onto the school grounds, restraint is necessary to remain safe.

Some people are conditioned to believe that physical violence is the way to solve problems. Sadly, this contributes greatly to school violence. In an effort to lessen the number of incidents involving violence, many schools across the nation has started programs to educate students on violence prevention. The goal of such programs is to re-train thinking, and offer students safe alternatives to handling conflict. Schools experiencing many violent attacks may choose to adopt a peer mediation program. Furthermore, many school officials have started to take threats serious. Therefore, if a student threatens another, the school must investigate the threat and seek alternatives for keeping the student safe.
