School Fights

You may remember Eddie Haskell from the old sitcom, “Leave it to Beaver”.  He was the classic bully who used to cause problems for Wally and Larry.  Well, it isn’t the fifties anymore and the face of the classic bully has changed.  Today, bullying and school fights are a major threat to the safety of children in public schools.  No longer are children threatening to take someone’s lunch money, today children are going on rampages and bringing guns to school.  However, there are many proactive measures that educators, parents, and students are taking to help beat bullying and prevent school fights.  All of these measures have helped to decrease the amount of school fights and when incorporated, they will create safer schools for all children.

One of the first areas that need to be addressed is that public schools must have a “No Tolerance” attitude towards bullying and school fights.  Children should also be taught that if they are bullied, that they need to notify a parent or teacher immediately.  Many times, children become victimized and fear speaking up about the abuse they are receiving.  However, if they don’t speak up, it will only grow worse.  School fights are a dangerous situation and can jeopardize the well being of students.  Every student deserves to feel safe while receiving his or her education.

It is important for parents to speak to their children about bullying and fighting and develop a plan of action in case a situation arises.  Teachers should also address the issue with their students.

Action should be taken against the bully as well.  Counseling may be needed to uncover the root of the problem and the bully’s parents will need to be notified of the situation.  It is very common for parents to be in denial regarding the actions of their children.  Sometimes, it is also discovered that the bully is displaying behavior that they learned in their home.  Therefore, it is imperative that the student is dealt with immediately, so that the other students will remain safe.
