Public SchoolMany public schools also have online college courses! One of the biggest and most momentous occasions of parenthood comes with the first day your child attends public school. Kindergarten is a rite of passage into the world of public education and marks the beginning of their academic career. Many parents have greater apprehensions than their children do, but it should be a journey that is embarked on together. Most every public school has a kindergarten orientation. Some schools offer a shortened school day where parents can stay with their children and others offer a day before school starts to come in and visit the classroom, teacher and other students before the actual school year begins. Make sure you attend all welcoming events with your child to help familiarize them with their new public school environment. Talk through a typical day at school with your child. You can relieve many of their apprehensions by simply explaining to them how their day will go. Make sure you cover transportation to and from school, where they will go when school is out, what they will do throughout the day, and who to go to with problems or questions. You would be surprised at what kids think of and so a thorough explanation of the day’s processes will help ease their minds considerably. Check out books about starting school at the library. There are hundreds of children’s books that talk about the first day of school. Read them together with your child. This not only creates an avenue for discussion, but also places an emphasis on reading, which is a priority in the public school. Many of these tactics apply not only to kindergarteners entering their first year of school, but might also apply to older children who might have attended kindergarten at their day care or to previously home schooled students who are now entering public school for the first time. By familiarizing yourself and your child with their new environment and discussing the events that will transpire during the course of their day, you will alleviate much of their concerns and will be able to relax more yourself. |
