Middle School Cheerleaders

While attending middle school, many students participate in after school or extracurricular activities. For the most part, after school programs consist of sports, in which the majority of players are males. Even though many schools have sport teams for females, some female students prefer cheerleading. By joining a squad, middle school cheerleaders receive exercise, self-confidence, and the opportunity to prepare for acceptance on a high school squad. Of course, the primarily goal of middle school cheerleaders is to create a good spirit during sporting events – even if the school team is losing.

Unfortunately, becoming a middle school cheerleader is not always enjoyable. Before a young girl is accepted onto a squad, she must try-out for the team. Try-outs involve a few days of practice, in which current cheerleaders teach the newbie a few routines. Because many girls have never cheered before, learning the choreography and routine can be challenging. Once practice is completed, the girls must fine tune their routine and perform in front of a judging committee, which usually consist of the squad's coach (a teacher), captain, and co-captain. After auditions conclude, the judges will announce the name of all girls who will join the team.

Try-outs for middle school cheerleaders are held in the spring. All girls making the squad will not officially join the team until the new fall school year. Cheerleading rehearsals are imperative. For this matter, the girls may be required to stay after school three or four times a week for practice. In some cases, cheerleader practice begins prior to the school years, perhaps in August. This way, the girls can be ready for the first football game of the season, which usually takes place in September. Aside from football, middle school cheerleaders are also in attendance for basketball games.
