Learning Styles

There are many different types of learning styles.  The concept of learning styles is deep-rooted in the classification of psychological types.  Learning styles is based on research that demonstrates that as the result of heredity, upbringing, and current environmental demands that people from different backgrounds process information differently.  There are different types of learning styles.  People as generally classified as 1) concrete and abstract perceivers, and 2) active and reflective processors.  Concrete perceivers take in information through direct experience.  This can be done by doing, and, sensing or even smelling something in particular.  This results in what is being done or seen to be remembered. Abstract perceivers take in information through analysis, observation and thinking.

Active processors make sense of an experience by automatically using the new information.  Reflective processors make sense of an experience by reflecting on and thinking about it.  You will find that many schools teach to the favor or abstract perceiving and reflective processing.  Even though schools teach in this manner, it is still very possible for students who learn in other matters are able to learn in this style.  Other learning styles that people learn in that are very similar to the above styles are visual learners, auditory learners and kinesthetic and tactile learners.  Each one of these learners spell, talk, concentrate, read and handle everyday activities differently.

When it comes to educators and curriculum, many teachers try to place emphasis on intuition, feeling, sensing and try to place emphasis on analyzing, reasoning, and sequential problem solving.  It is important for teachers to aim their instruction methods to connect with all four learning styles.  Though this may not be required the school system, some teachers take it upon themselves to have as great of an impact on their students as they can.  If all teachers take the various learning styles and apply it to the way they teach, it will not only help each student, but also open up development of the entire brain.
