Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities are neurological disorders.  It is also considered to be as a result of someone’s brain being “wired” differently.  People, especially children are as smart as the next child they just may have difficulty reading, writing, spelling or even reasoning.  Their average intelligence levels are often average or even above average.  Learning disabilities are not diseases that can be cured, but rather is a life long matter.  There are ways that a person must deal with these circumstances. With intervention any child can learn and succeed in school and be successful in life.  Parents are major influences in their children’s life.  Parents can help their children with learning disabilities by encouraging their strengths, knowing their weaknesses and working with their child as well as educational professionals when dealing with their child.

There are many professional people who struggle with learning disabilities that many people do not know about.  For example, Albert Einstein could not read until he was nine years old, Walt Disney, General George Patton and Vice President Nelson Rockefeller has difficulties reading their entire life because of learning disabilities.  There are also famous actors and actresses who have learning disabilities that have not impacted the success of their career.  A matter of fact, fifteen percent of the United States population or one in seven Americans has some sort of learning disability.  These type of disabilities often run in families and 80% of these students often times have reading problems.

Some signs of learning disabilities that can develop in your child is having trouble learning the alphabet, connecting letters to their sounds, making many mistakes when reading aloud or repeating and pausing often or not understanding what he or she reads.

Common types of learning disabilities are dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, auditory and visual processing disorders, and nonverbal learning disabilities.  Learning disabilities vary from person to person.  One person with one type of learning problem may not experience the same type of learning issues as another. This is why it is so important to determine what type of learning disability it is so intervention can be done immediately.
