Home School Material

Online college courses are a great addition to any home school program!

For many years, schools have been the primary place of learning for children. Unless there was extenuating circumstances such as illness, most children were taught in classrooms. Today, a large number of parents are opting to educate their children at home. School violence has increased over the years. In an effort to protect children from random acts of violence, peer pressure, and unhealthy influences, more and more children are taught within the safety of their homes. There are advantages and disadvantages to home schooling. To be successful, parents must select a curriculum and get hold of home school material. Additionally, if choosing to home school, you cannot become lazy and put off teaching. By doing so, this places a child at risk for falling behind in their coursework.

Home school material is generally provided with the program. Prior to schooling children, some states require parents to attend an orientation or workshop. Parents must be committed to the education of their children. Next, parents must research different home school programs. Following enrollment, home school materials are sent. The schooling packet will include a curriculum, text book, syllabus, and teaching guide for parents. Students are required to complete coursework by assigned dates. This type of learning requires discipline. Because parents and children are at home, it is easy to become distracted. Television watching and running errands may interfere with learning. On average, learning takes about 3 hours daily. Because home schooling is flexible, students can learn in the morning, afternoon, or evenings. There are home schooling curriculums for every grade level, including pre-school.

Home school supplies and materials will vary. Each home schooling program includes different learning tools. For example, some programs offer subject kits, which might include math, literary arts, science, history, etc. All home school material for each course are included within the kit. Typical home school program are four subject kits. Parents who want to incorporate religion may consider a five subject kit that includes Bible instruction. Even though kits consist of all necessary items, parent may invest in additional learning materials. For example, if a student is having difficulty grasping a concept, tutor-style workbooks are very useful. Additional learning tools might include audio cassettes, display posters, computerized practice quizzes, etc. These are available at most parents and teacher retail stores. If unable to assist a student, parents may take advantage of professional tutoring programs.

Many schools incorporate holiday festivities and celebrations into the curriculum. Home school children can also benefit from these activities. Most often, home school children and parents get together and set up field trips. To incorporate a holiday, parents may purchase classroom decorations or posters with a specific theme. For example, throughout Black History Month, posters including the famous faces of historical African-American figures are appropriate. Moreover, home schooling groups can plan holiday parties or other cultural activities. The only negative aspect of home schooling is isolation. However, parents can make plans for social activities, and encourage their children to build lasting friendships with their peers.
