Home School CurriculumOnline college courses are a great supplement to any home school education! One of the greatest advantages to home schooling is the ability to be selective about the curriculum you follow. Make no mistake, home school curriculum has become big business to publishers, but choosing your home school curriculum is one of the flexibilities afforded by the entire process. If you are new to home schooling and are having difficulty choosing a home school curriculum, talk with other home schooling families about materials they have used and which ones they have liked and disliked. You can gain a wealth of knowledge from the experience of others. You should also listen to your instincts. It is very likely that if you have chosen home schooling for your child’s education, you have done so to provide them individualized instruction. Tailor your home school curriculum to their individual needs. You do not have to use a strict curriculum or even a commercial curriculum in its entirety. You are free to mix and match the home school curriculum you use as long as you are meeting the state requirements for subject matter. If your child has a particular interest in one area, but a weakness in another, choose a home school curriculum that appeals to both their interests and weaknesses. You may also find that they excel in a subject and can be provided with a more challenging curriculum in that area. The choice is up to you because you are the teacher. You may also choose to supplement your home school curriculum with real-life experiences or with literature, or maybe you need to find some educational software or video games that incorporate an educational aspect into a game. Online resources abound, but you can also find resources for home school curriculum and supplemental material at your local public library. Ask the children’s librarian for input. No matter how you go about choosing a home school curriculum, be prepared to make changes if necessary. The benefit you are giving your child is to educate them at their own pace and you must be flexible enough to recognize when they become stagnant or fall behind, which ever the case may be. Lastly, take confidence in your own abilities to learn from your mistakes, learn from the mistakes of others and be persistent in your cause. |
