Cooperative Learning

Cooperative learning is a very important teaching strategy.  It has been proven that students who have the ability to work in a cooperative manner and collaborate with other students are able to not only learn faster and more efficiently, but they also are able to have greater retention and feel more positive about the cooperative learning experience.  Cooperative learning is very important in grade school and college because it prepares the student for the workplace.  Team environments in work are essential in just about every job that there is.  You learn interpersonal life skills and teach you how to collaborate effectively.

Cooperative learning improves student learning by providing shared and cognitive set information between students, motivates students to learn material, ensure that students construct their own knowledge, provide formative feedback, develop social and group skills for success outside of the classroom, and promote positive interaction between members of different cultural and socio economic groups.  Cooperative learning and collaborative learning go hand in hand with each other.  Collaborative learning is a method of teaching and learning in which a group of students team together to explore a significant question or create a meaningful project.  Cooperative learning is a specific type of collaborative learning.  In cooperative learning, small groups of students work together on a structured activity.  They are individually held responsible for their own work, and the work of the group as a whole is graded.  These types of groups work face to face with each other and learn to work as a team.

There are ways to create an environment that cooperative learning works best. Students should feel safe and at the same time feel challenged by the curriculum.  Student groups need to be small enough that all can contribute. When students work on a task together the task must be clearly defined. This is cooperative learning.
