Boarding SchoolGet an Online Degree from HOME in your spare time!A boarding school is a school where school-aged children through the age of 18 attend school and live. Though a boarding school may offer education from kindergarten through 12th grade, the average norm for attendance is approximately 5 years. The modern day boarding school in North America is often seen as an elitist way of life. The boarding school is a concept popularized in British culture and is viewed differently in America. Just as the fictional boarding school of Hogwarts in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, a boarding school houses students for three terms and then the student returns home for the summer. Other intermittent “holidays” may be taken at special times. A boarding school is comprised of full-time staff members who assume the pseudo-role of “parent”, meaning they are responsible for the safety, discipline, and general wellbeing of the students assigned to their “house”, a small, collective group of students. Because it is a private institution, boarding school does not come cheaply. There are meals, lodging, and other living expenses provided to the students in addition to their education. Many parents who send their children to boarding school do so in hopes that it will provide social, academic, or life experiences that they could not otherwise provide. Thus, the reputation of boarding schools as being an elitist way of life. Western society views boarding schools very differently than Eastern culture. However, there are boarding schools located in over half of the states in the US. Not all boarding schools require students live on campus full-time as some schools have students who are only part-time boarders and they return home for visits much more frequently. Many experts in the United States argue that boarding school limits the socialization of its students, but advocates equally argue that it is civilization and not socialization that make boarding school the best choice. |
