Beauty School

Learn about online college courses and programs!

If hoping to start a career in the cosmetology field, choosing a good beauty school is crucial to your success. Because many people are willing to spend a lot of money to look their best, cosmetology is a very profitable field. In most instances, hair stylists are independent contractors with their own cliental. Hence, choosing a career in cosmetology allows flexibility and the opportunity to earn an unlimited salary. Before one can start a career as a hair stylist, makeup artist, or nail technician, they must attend a beauty school.

Beauty schools are located across the country. There is a variety of programs available. Furthermore, students can select a curriculum that best fits their needs. For example, you can choose to specialize in hair, nails, or both. Since many salons include multiple pampering options, some stylists are opting to become skilled in more than one area of cosmetology. The curriculums offered by beauty schools are different. For the most part, students learn the basics of hair, skin, and nail care. However, some schools also provide education in areas such as customer service and business management. Beauty professionals are constantly dealing with people. Thus, it is important for cosmetologists to be professional. Additionally, some hair stylists and nail technicians eventually launch their own beauty shop. In this instance, a basic knowledge of business management will contribute to their success.

Beauty schools are always accepting applications. To prepare for acceptance, you should contact several different beauty schools and inquire about tours. Talk with an admission counselor and ask for course information. Beauty schools are less expensive than colleges or technical schools. Nonetheless, many applicants require financial aid. After submitting an application, begin arranging financial aid. Admission counselors typically have access to grant and financial aid applications. Even if a student cannot get approved for government aid, some beauty schools offer in-house financing to qualified students.

Before completing and submitting an application to a beauty school, you should determine an area of study. Students are not necessarily required to learn every aspect of cosmetology. However, if you want training in hair and nail care, include this information on the application. Beauty schools can only accept a certain number of students for each program. The best part about beauty schools is that students receive hands-on-training. These schools consist of classroom instruction. However, there is a beauty salon within the facility. Initially, techniques are practiced on mannequins. Once a student progresses, the beauty school will advertise cosmetology services to the public. Thus, students are given the opportunity to work on live models. As the student performs a service, class instructors closely monitor their work. This benefits the client because they can receive a hair cut, wash and style, or perm for under $15.

Once a cosmetology student completes formal training, he or she must take the state licensing examination. Students who pass the state examination are issued a cosmetology license; and may begin working in this field. Because cosmetology programs are short, students can begin working within a few months.
