American Education

American education has very primitive beginnings.  History shows that even as far back as the 15th century parents knew the importance of their children’s education.  For hundreds of years, children who received an American education carried what was commonly called a hornbook on their belt or around their neck.

The hornbook was made in the shape of a paddle from wood and had lessons important to an American education on it that was covered with a piece of see through horn, much in the way we use lamination today. American education began with teaching of the combining of consonants and vowels and the alphabet, with lessons of these pinned to the hornbook.

History shows another form of American education was similar to what we now call places of day care.  A neighborhood lady, called a dame would open her home to children, and this is where they would receive lessons in American education, consisting of numbers and letters.

History shows that 370 years ago the first college opened in the progression of American education.  Harvard University produced mostly clergy graduates, however, in the late 1800s American education gained more popularity and the college saw graduates in Dental, Arts, Business, and the Sciences, and even produced such famous scholars as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Oliver Wendall Holmes.

A worthy goal of American education is to help each individual child reach his or her fullest potential and further prospects for a successful future.  Those who teach American education understand the importance of commitment.  They know a successful American education needs to be diverse yet equal, and at the same time needs to instill a sense of community and promotion of one’s best efforts.

Professional, zealous, and creative teachers have a special responsibility in seeing to it that all children have the opportunity to enjoy an American education.
